HIGHLIGHTS – Top 4 of 25 New Business Motions and Bylaw Amendments proposed

HIGHLIGHTS – Top 4 of 25 New Business Motions and Bylaw Amendments proposed for the WSBC business meeting agenda at the upcoming World Service Business conference

1.The proposal to rescind the Plan of Action tool.

To remove a tool that has invited outside issues into our rooms, which dilutes our primary objective. The tool of action plan, as worded in The Tools of Recovery pamphlet, is opening the door to private interpretation of the Twelve Traditions, which is absolutely detrimental to OA as a whole. It has become apparent that the action plan tool is encouraging making our problems and our issues matters of discussion, instead of focusing on the Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions. It is the Steps and Traditions which bring us to a recovered state where we correct our irresponsible behaviors, thereby negating the need for action plan and all the outside issues mentioned therein. With this action plan tool we have begun to lose our focus. It allows for our primary purpose message to be diluted which creates a real danger to our recovery.

2. The proposal to make Prayer and Meditation a tenth tool.

To recognize that prayer and meditation are already essential tools of the OA program for our membership, and to acknowledge their complementarity—that they belong together—as an official tool.

Although prayer and meditation are already contained within Step Eleven, members may think that they should not try to use these most helpful activities until they are “at” that Step. Adding prayer and meditation as an official tool may help members who have not progressed in their Step work. In practical terms, newcomers and struggling members may especially benefit from the inclusion of this
tool, since it can offer the help they need to begin their journey through the Steps.

3. The proposal to amend our preamble:

through the Twelve Steps of OA to those who still suffer.”

L.  Amend last sentence of preamble. “Our primary purpose is to abstain stay abstinent from compulsive overeating and to carry this message of recovery to those who still suffer.”

M. Amend last sentence of preamble. “Our primary purpose is to abstain from compulsive overeating and to carry this message of recovery to those who still suffer.achieve sustained abstinence from compulsive eating to work through the Twelve Step process, and to share our message of recovery with other compulsive eaters who still suffer.

4. the proposal to include social media in our anonymity statements.

Expand anonymity to include social media. “….at the level of press, films, television, and all public media of comunication including all social communications media…”
